Sony Digging Deep into Spider-Man Lore With 'Nightwatch' Movie?!

Yes, this is possibly true. We didn't make this up or spread the rumor that Sony wants to make a movie of a character who's sole purpose in Spider-Man comics was to be a Spawn rip-off.

When you think of minority heroes in Spider-Man comics, the current Spider-Man, Miles Morales comes to mind. Or maybe Hobie Brown aka the Prowler? Female hero? Silk aka Cindy Moon or the Wraith aka Yuri Watanabe. If we're going for an anti-hero, Cardiac or come's to mind. Not really Nightwatch.

Nightwatch was created by Terry Kavanagh, Alex Saviuk, and Derek Yaniger. While the other two probably doesn't ring any sort of bell, the name Terry Kavanagh alone is probably bringing a cold shiver down Spider-Man fans' sides. The writer was responsible for a large chunk of infamous Spider-Man stories.

Nightwatch himself was basically Marvel's response to the creation of Spawn. You know the character created by former Spider-Man artist/writer Todd McFarlane? Not like Marvel would have a grudge or anything. Right? Because it was the 90s, the character even had his own ongoing which lasted twelve issues. Not too long after that, the character was killed off at the tail end of the Clone Saga. Surprisingly (or not), the character stayed dead until actually quite recently and showed up in Charles Soule and Javier Pulido's She-Hulk comic. In that, Nightwatch eventually was revealed to be the series' "big bad" (aka the bad guy for the series).

So with all that said, it's kind of surprising to hear Sony is apparently literally scrapping the bottom of the Spider-Man comic barrel according to a rumor that began today n Meet The Movie Press via this video:

Five minutes in, Jeff Sneider says that Edward Ricourt is already tapped to write with Spike Lee in talks to direct the film. I guess Spike really wants to that Old Boy remake to not be the worst film he's maybe directed? This is all Sony's answer to Cyborg and Black Panther. But again, why use this Spider-Man character? That Miles Morales animated movie is still on track right? Yep. Still on track for 2018.

So Sony is really going to burn the Earth with superhero movies aren't they?
