X-Men: Apocalypse left longtime comic fans bewildered with its bizarre downplaying of Magneto's atrocities, and equally obtuse redemption arc for one of the series more memorable villains. The black hole of rumors that is comic journalism has long been speculating that Jennifer Lawrence would be retiring from the character after her contract expired and moving onto more serious films.
Well the internet had a fantastic surprise today for longtime fans of Bryan Singer's new X-Men movies, or at the very least the ones who aren't committed. J-Law is returning to her iconic role in the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and is doing it for the noblest of reasons. That's right, you lucky devils, she's doing it for the fans! Check out what she had to say in a Digital Spy interview.
"My contract was up, I didn't have to do another one, but if I didn't do another one, what would her story be?" she told Digital Spy.
"I felt like I owed it to the fans, and I owed it to the character to follow her journey, to be fair to the movies, and not be like, 'I don't want to do another X-Men!' And then I just never show up and everyone's very confused about the Mystique they've been following for the last three films."
Further on in the article she discussed a recent nightmare she had after reading the script for X-Men: Dark Phoenix and had some concerning things to say about the film. Be forewarned her firsthand account of the horror she describes is not for the faint of heart.
"I saw the movie last night with an audience," she said. "And I'm in the movie – I know everything that happens, it's me, so I know everything's okay, and I was clutching my chest, grabbing arms, closing my eyes.
"It's really, really assaulting, I was really shaking when I left the movie, and I was like, 'What have we done? What have we unleashed?'"
Holy Siege Perilous, that doesn't sound good. Eventually, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be "Unleashed" on a theater near you.
