Another day, another Black Panther title… It's almost like the character has a movie coming out. Yesterday, a new digital comic was announced titled Black Panther: Long Live the King. Today, we are hearing of a new comic which will explore T'Challa's earliest days of being king.

The new comic is titled Rise of the Black Panther and is written by io9 senior writer Evan Narcisse. Like yesterday's title, Rise will expand the world of Ta-Nehisi Coates' Black Panther mainline title, and is acting as sort of a prequel to that series. Narcisse describes the series as:

"… essentially the story of T’Challa’s first year as king, where he makes the decision to end centuries of secrecy and let the world know about Wakanda. It’s a choice that angers many in Wakanda and attracts the attention of the global community on Earth-616."

The writer also reflects on how this story is sort of a mirror to Coates' first Black Panther arc:

"There's a bit of thematic irony here because Ta-Nehisi's first story arc involved an instance of change where he represented the historical status quo. In Rise of the Black Panther, he's the one rebelling against what's always been done. He goes from being a rebel of sorts to being the establishment."

Narcisse also wants to explore Wakandan technology and teases:

"I want to show a little window of how Wakandan technology has evolved over the decades. There may or may not be giant Panther mechs by the time this is all done."

Hopefully that means a giant vibranium blazing sword.

Rise of the Black Panther starts in January 2018. Other creators on this title were not named in the article.
