Jim Davis (& Others) Contributes To 'Unbeatable Squirrel Girl' #26

Will Galactus hate Mondays?

Source: Garfield creator Jim Davis drew a Galactus story for new Marvel comic

November's Unbeatable Squirrel Girl will be a jam issue of sorts. In the solicitation for the issue (which has different superheroes contributing comics of their own), several artists are listed including "a legendary comic strip artist making his Marvel debut":

  • In this special standalone issue, Squirrel Girl has convinced, cajoled, and otherwise induced her friends in the Marvel Universe to make comics of their own! For the very first time, find out what kind of comics your favorite Marvel characters would REALLY make! Will Tony Stark write author-insert coffee-shop alternate-reality comics where everyone talks up how great he is? It seems likely, and yet, he has given us something EVEN CRAZIER to publish!
  • Featuring TONS of special guest artists, including a legendary comic strip artist making his Marvel debut!
  • This unique view of both Squirrel Girl and the Marvel Universe is sure to make readers laugh, turn the page, read a bit, see a new joke, and then laugh again! It may also make readers say, "Oh my gosh you've gotta read this comic; I'm so glad I purchased it at my local comic-book store and will definitely patronize them again in the near future!!" NO OTHER COMIC is making this explicit promise this month, so in our opinion you should definitely order our talking squirrel comic book.

Well, it looks like the cat is out of the bag regarding that legendary comic strip artist and it's Jim Davis of Garfield fame. Davis, with assistance from Gary Barker and Dan Davis, will be taking on Galactus and Silver Surfer's story. He explains that North approached him about the story:

"He explained Galactus seemed like a logical one for me, because of Garfield — having the appetite of the planets, and being one of the biggest and oldest of the Marvel characters."

Davis also talked about his approach to the characters:

"Ryan explained to me, he wanted it to be done in our style. He likened and wrote Galactus as Garfield and Norin Radd as Jon. That determined what they were going to look like" … "When you look at the Silver Surfer, he's 75 percent of the way there anyway with Jon, all we had to do is give him the big eyes. That was a natural. John kind of hangs around Garfield anyway, he's the straight man to Garfield's gags and has to get him food. He's like Garfield's herald. Galactus was tougher. We were throwing stuff back and forth, and the initial sketches just weren't working for Galactus. I said okay, we gotta make him fat. The guy eats planets, for god's sake! Once we do that, it's a little less Galactus but certainly a lot more Garfield. It looked more natural."

Entertainment Weekly posted a preview of Davis' Galactus story, as well as samples of a Kraven story by Michael Cho, Spider-Man by The Rahzzah, Howard the Duck by Chip Zdarsky and Erica Henderson, and Tippy Toe by Rico Renzi.
