Hayao Miyazaki's Next Film Title Revealed

Probably won't involve a caterpillar…

Hayao Miyazaki, serial retire-r and master animator/director, announced his latest retirement back in 2013 while he was completing The Wind Rises. The man who brought us Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away just to name a few, didn't stay retired for very long (as usual) and was confirmed to be out of retirement earlier this year and working on his next film.

Though we didn't know what his next film would be, there was some speculation that the short he was working on for the Ghibli Museum, Boro the Caterpillar, might be expanded into a feature film. Well, it's not likely to be if the title of the new film is any indicator. At an event celebrating the opening of the Natsume Soseki Memorial Museum at Tokyo's Tokyo's Waseda University, Miyazaki revealed the title of his next film: Kimi-tachi wa Dou Ikiru ka.

Kimi-tachi wa Dou Ikiru ka roughly translates to "How Do You Live?" or "How Are You Living?" and is also the title of 1937 book by Genaburou Yoshino. It doesn't seem like it will be a direct adaptation of the book, but the book will have meaning to the protagonist of the film. The book:

"… centers around a man named Koperu and his uncle, and through Koperu's spiritual growth, it discusses how to live as human beings."

There is no release date for the movie, but Miyazaki thinks it might take 3 or 4 years to complete. This means it might miss the 2020 target Miyazaki mentioned previously, but hey you can rush a product out especially if it is for your precious grandson!
