Nintendo May Work With Illumination Entertainment On An Animated 'Mario' Movie

Hopefully the movie will not be despicable

The last time Nintendo's Mario hit the big screen in his own movie was in 1993's live-action Super Mario Bros. Things did not go well. Since then Nintendo has been very reluctant to release another Hollywood blockbuster. More recently though, it seems their stance is softening as they are branching out to other venues with their IP.

A few years ago, as a result of the Sony hack, it was revealed that Nintendo was in talks with Sony for an animated Mario movie. Today it is being revealed that it may be Illumination Entertainment may be the ones to once again bring Mario to the big screen. Illumination is an animation production company that makes the Despicable Me and Minions movies, and also recently released The Secret Life of Pets and Sing. If the deal goes through, it will likely be distributed via Universal, the owner of Illumination, and whose parks will house  Super Mario Land.

The news was broken by The Wall Street Journal (paywall):

Though Mario has been the star in animation before, it was mostly on the small screen. In the US in several series (eg. The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World) in the late 80s and early 90s, and anime released as original animation videos (OVA). There was a 65-minute anime movie released in theaters called Super Mario Bros.: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen! in 1986, but that didn't see much fame.

Nintendo hasn't signed on the dotted line yet, so the animated film's fate is unknown (as is a release date). Hopefully this won't botch an appearance by Mario in a Wreck-It Ralph film. Until we hear more, we guess we'll have to wait on more news of the Detective Pikachu  movie
