Robert Kirkman's Skybound Entertainment has signed a deal with South Korean game developers Com2us to expand the Summoners War universe. The franchise would span across various mediums, including comics, animated series and more. The announcement came just before the final matches at the Summoners War World Arena Championship on Saturday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Development of the new universe outside of the gaming space will be overseen by Kirkman, Skybound co-founder and CEO David Alpert, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars/The Angry Birds Movie producer and CEO of Skybound North Catherine Winder.

Summoners War is a mobile turn-based strategy game which gives players control of a summoner who can call forth over 1,000 different monsters to do battle. The game launched in June 2014 and has been downloaded more than 80 million times. In the three and a half years since it was released, Summoners War has generated over one billion dollars in revenue, of which Kirkman wants a slice of.

Kirkman, Alpery, and Winder all released a joint statement that showed they definitely are in this for the love of the game and not the dollar signs.

"The Summoners War team has created an incredibly compelling and fantastical world ripe with engaging characters and storytelling opportunities," Kirkman, Winder and Alpert said in a joint statement. "We are excited and proud to partner with them to expand this rich universe, loved by so many from around the world for audiences across all cultures and ages, into multiple forms of content filled with the adventure and wonder of the game."
