Thundershock! It looks like Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds will taking on the role of Detective Pikachu in the Detective Pikachu movie. Disappointingly, Reynolds will not be wearing a practical Pikachu suit for the movie, but rather it will be a motion capture performance.
While details about the movie are scarce, it does seem like it does share some of the characteristics of the Great Detective Pikachu videogame, released only in Japan. Like the videogame, Detective Pikachu is a special Pokémon who can speak. It's unknown though, if in the movie this Pikachu won't have access to its moveset like in the game. Also like in the game, Detective Pikachu will have a human companion, though the role sounds a bit different. In the game, a boy named Tim Goodman accompanies the detective, solving Pokémon-related mysteries. We're not sure of his character's name, but Justice Smith will be joining forces with Pikachu to find his missing parents. Kathryn Newton will also be in the movie as a "sassy" reporter.
The release date for the film hasn't been announced, but it is being said the production will start in London in January.
Here's a trailer for the game:
