Jury Rules That Shortened Form Of Comic Convention Is Trademarked Phrase

Didn't put it in the headline so we don't get sued.

In an American twist on the classic battle of David and Goliath, Goliath won proving that if you work hard and dump money into a lawsuit, you can win. In this case, it was San Diego Comic Con vs Salt Lake Comic Con over the right to use the phrase "comic con".

The jury found that Salt Lake Comic Con was in violation of using San Diego Comic Con's trademarked phrase "comic con" without permission, although it didn't do it willfully. Of the $12 million in damages San Diego Comic Con sought, the jury awarded them a whopping $20,000.

San Diego Comic Con's defense consisted of arguing that Salt Lake Comic Con stole their trademark in order to benefit from its long-standing reputation of being over-crowded and threatening to leave the city it grew that reputation in.

Salt Lake Comic Con maintained that the phrase "comic con" is a generic shortened version of "comic convention", which any normal person would've presumably understood.

It took the six panel jury eight days to decide on a verdict.
