The Walking Dead Producer Believes Ratings Metrics Are Flawed When Not In His Favor

He adds that doomsayers shouldn't base predictions on single episodes.

Skybound Entertainment CEO David Alpert recently defended The Walking Dead's lower ratings with a two-pronged approach. First, he used the defense that the entire industry is down.

"I don't think in any way the brand has lost its relevance in general," he said. "I think we're just seeing a decline in urgency across all media to consume something at a specific time."

He also believes that the audience for any given episode shouldn't be used as a metric for the overall health of the show. This would be a good argument if the show didn't lose nearly 4 million viewers over the course of Season 8's eight episodes, a low the show hasn't seen since Season 2.

Of note is that the show hasn't yet been renewed for a ninth season. The current season was renewed just prior to Season 7's premiere. AMC executives could be waiting to see how the rest of Season 8's episodes pan out before making a decision.
