Third Comic Book Store In Three Months Announces Closure In San Diego

The future isn't looking too bright.

San Diego is a hot spot for comics, home to San Diego Comic ConIDW Publishing, and for a brief time Wildstorm Productions. But for comic book stores, the city isn't faring too well. In the last three months, three San Diego stores have closed or have announced future closings.

Rising Sun Comics in Mission Valley was officially closed at the start of November 2017. The store expanded into a second location in Pacific Beach in June 2017 briefly before closing due to underperformance. That, coupled with the rough industry year, led to the shuttering of the main store.

Villainous Lair in Normal Heights announced earlier this week that the store would be closing at the end of January. The store's sales have been down all of 2017, with sales low enough to not cover costs in November or December.

On Comic Ground in Hillcrest has signs in the windows that the store, which has been around since 1994, is going out of business.

So far this year is shaping up to be a rough one for local comic stores. Be sure to shop there while they're around.
