In the Summer of 2016, it was revealed that the live-action Pokémon movie would be titled Detective Pikachu. Pokémon fans noticed that that title resembled the 2016 Japanese eShop (downloadable) 3DS game Great Detective Pikachu: Birth of a New Duo (Meitantei Pikachū: Shin Konbi Tanjō in Japanese), which never did hit our shores.
While we are still unsure how closely the Ryan Reynolds-led movie will resemble the game, we will now have the chance to find out. Along with a new hardcopy release of the game in Japan, the game will also be headed West. Not only is the game headed our way but so is a new amiibo (figurine with downloadable content or other function), and it is a larger amiibo than normal. You won't have to wait long to test your wits with the game, as it lands on March 23.
Here is how the game is described:
Take the role of young Tim Goodman and explore with his talkative partner Pikachu in the action-adventure game Detective Pikachu, coming to systems in the Nintendo 3DS family on March 23, 2018. Tim and this gruff, coffee-drinking Pikachu have teamed up to investigate the disappearance of Tim's father. Look for clues, talk to witnesses, and uncover the secrets of Ryme City!
A special Detective Pikachu amiibo is in the works, too. This amiibo features a sleuthing Pikachu that's larger than the standard amiibo, and when used with your game, it can unlock short videos that may contain helpful hints for your investigation. Check back for details on this special limited-edition amiibo.
