Stohl Retells 'The Life Of Captain Marvel'

The true origin of Captain Marvel

Source: 'Captain Marvel' author Margaret Stohl says new origin story is 'nothing you'll expect'

ABC News revealed that writer Margaret Stohl is working on a new retelling of Captain Marvel's origin in The Life of Captain Marvel. It's unclear if this is a one-shot or a new series, but it is listed with a #1 and is described as being:

"… part of a new rollout of first issues by Marvel Comics, retelling and adding to the origin stories of the universe's greatest superheroes."

Stohl is no stranger to Captain Marvel, having been the writer of her two most recent comic series. She says she wanted to do this story before the Captain Marvel movie comes out (March 8, 2019) and stresses that this is a retelling not a reinvention of the character. Marvel describes The Life of Captain Marvel this way:

Carol Danvers was just a girl from the Boston suburbs who loved science and the Red Sox until a chance encounter with a Kree hero gave her incredible super powers. Now, she's a leader in the Avengers and the commander of Alpha Flight. But what if there was more to the story? When crippling anxiety attacks put her on the sidelines in the middle of a fight, Carol finds herself reliving memories of a life she thought was far behind her.

You can't outrun where you're from—and sometimes, you have to go home again. But there are skeletons in Captain Marvel's closet—and what she discovers will change her entire world...This is the true origin of Captain Marvel.

Stohl says that the story will show a softer side of Danvers and through the tale:

"You look through a different lens" … "It's nothing you'll expect and nothing you've seen happen but there will be parts of her life that change the context of what you've seen before, so it's telling the other side of the story, of how she came to be."

The Life of Captain Marvel #1 will release on July 4. Art on the book will be by Carlos Pacheco.
