ECCC: Bendis To Launch Two New Jinxworld Titles At DC

After leaving Marvel, Brian Michael Bendis  promised to transfer over his creator-owned Jinxworld titles digitally to DC as well as create new titles for that line. Today at Emerald City Comic Con (ECCC), Bendis announced two of those new titles in the Jinxworld line -- Pearl and Cover -- as well as the familiar artistic collaborators he will be working with on those titles.

Bendis' collaborator on Pearl will be Michael Gaydos, with whom the pair created Alias and Jessica Jones. This new title is about a tattoo artist for the Yakuza in San Francisco who falls in love with someone from a rival faction. According to Bendis, the main character in Pearl will not be a run-of-the-mill tattoo artist:

"We have a tattoo artist with a very special skin condition that will make the tattoos on her body very unique — and you'll see in the very first issue what's unique about her and the way she makes her tattoos and what her tattoos on her look and feel like. But it also tells the story of two people who are born in this situation that have grown up and find out they may be very different than the situation they were born in."

The writer also wants to make clear that this is not another Jessica Jones:

"It's a very different story, but it came from the same inspiration. Jessica herself is from the real world and real-world inspirations. I said if we do something together, it has to come from the same kind of inspiration, because people will know the difference. As soon as this fell into our laps, we were like "Yeah that's it, we're doing it." We didn't want to do "Here's Jessica Jones at DC" or "a Jessica Jones we own." We wanted to do something completely unique and different, with completely different visual touches."

On Cover, Bendis will be working with his friend David Mack (who also did some work on Jessica Jones and also Powers). Cover is inspired by a true story about a comic book artist that was recruited to act as a spy for the intelligence community. Bendis feels their own experience will help tell the tale:

"David and I have had a lot of travels over the last few years and we are going to have a lot of fun examining the world of espionage through the world of Comic-Con."

Was it Mack who was recruited?

"We were working on a book we were going to do next year, but he came over and told me a story that happened to him, and I'm like "well that's our book.""

You can find Pearl in August, and uncover Cover in the Fall.

It was also confirmed that 150 Jinxworld titles are now available digitally via, the Vertigo app for iOS, ComiXology, and Kindle. Several first issues of the available titles will be free until March 7.
