StarWars.com announced the next Star Wars animated series following the end of Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars Resistance. As implied by its name, the next series will jump ahead in time from the pre-Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope era to something more recent: the pre-Star Wars: The Force Awakens era.
Star Wars Resistance will tell the story of young Resistance recruit Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot with the top-secret mission of spying on the growing First Order. The series will also feature other ace pilots, including Poe Dameron voiced by his live-action counterpart Oscar Isaac. Dameron won't be the only familiar face as his partner BB-8 will also appear and so will chrome-plated baddie Captain Phasma, also voiced by her live-action counterpart Gwendoline Christie.
Resistance will be helmed by Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels veteran Dave Filoni (so expect more wolf references). Filoni said that the new series is inspired by his love for old-time aviatation:
"The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots" … "My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that's been a big influence on me. There's a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we've captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time."

Anime-inspired? Hmm… We wonder if they are going for the more fanciful Ghibli-style Porco Rosso (or The Wind Rises) style…
… Or perhaps something more adrenaline-fueled Macross or Gundam/Venus Wars 80s style mecha anime? This fan made Star Wars "TIE Fighter" short provides an example of what that would look like:
We'll just have to wait and see. Star Wars Resistance debuts this Fall on Disney Channel in the U.S. and continues on Disney XD.
