In 2011 a new manga launched based on the long-running live-action action series Ultraman. This manga, written by Eiichi Shimizu and illustrated by Tomohiro Shimoguchi, takes place after the original 1966 television series and sort of re-imagines events that follow. The manga, simply titled ULTRAMAN, is also available in the US via VIZ publishing.

Late last year it was announced that the manga series would be getting an anime adaptation, and like manga will also be heading West. Unlike the recent live-action series (eg. Ultraman Orb, Ultraman Geed), which streamed on sites like Crunchyroll in the West, the anime will be heading to Netflix. The reveal was made at the Netflix panel at Anime Expo 2018.

The anime will be co-directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed). 3DCG animation duties will be by Production I.G. and SOLA DIGITAL ARTS. Here's how the official site describes the series (note it is a Japanese site):

Ultraman first appeared on TV in 1966. Having been shot with the cutting-edge special effects, the silver giant soon became a widely known hero, and it's winning the popularity all over the world even today.

And ULTRAMAN (Author: Eiichi Shimizu×Tomohiro Shimoguchi) was serialized in _HERO'S monthly magazine in 2011.

In "ULTRAMAN", Ultraman was drawn as a "Human-sized hero" who fights in a metallic Ultraman suit. And Shinjiro Hayata, a high school student who inherited the gene of Ultraman from his father Shin Hayata, becomes Ultraman. Having brought in the element of "the fate lies between father and son" and "the human-sized hero", it changed the traditional images of Ultraman and gained popularity among young people. This led it to become a big seller and its circulation has reached more than 2.6 million.

Also, this ULTRAMAN, whose physical appearance was aimed to be "the first-ever Ultraman", will become the full 3DCG animation film by the hands of globally-acting amazing staff.

The ULTRAMAN anime lands on Netflix in Spring 2019.

In other Ultraman news, the newest Ultraman live-action series, Ultraman R/B, launches this weekend in Japan. It's currently unknown if that series will head West like other recent Ultraman series.
