During the Star Trek: Discovery panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), fans got to see the cast and crew of the show but on stage and onscreen. A Star Trek: Discovery first look at the show's second season was shown and now it is online. The second season follows up from the final episode of the first season. In that episode, the Discovery crew received a transmission Captain Christopher Pike of the starship Enterprise.
In the second season, we'll see Pike, played by Anson Mount, onboard the Discovery on a special mission… one that might be related to a certain Vulcan we all know. Have a look:
The panel also announced a series of shorts, perhaps part of the additional Trek projects previously rumored, that will take place in the Discovery universe. The shorts will be part of a series called Star Trek: Short Treks. Four of these are currently planned, each running about 10-15 minutes. Here is a description of the planned shorts:
Rainn Wilson will return to play Harry Mudd in a short he will also direct, and Aldis Hodge will star in another as Craft, a man who finds himself the only human on board a deserted ship. Additional episodes will include a deep dive into Saru's (Doug Jones) backstory as the first Kelpien to join Starfleet, and Tilly's (Mary Wiseman) journey aboard the U.S.S. Discovery and her friendship with an unlikely partner.
Both the second season of Discovery and Short Treks will air on CBS All Access. Star Trek: Discovery season 2 starts in early 2019.
