Fourth 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' Rebuild Film Finally Hitting Japan In 2020

We guess they had to deal with Godzilla first

Neon Genesis Evangelion was a smash hit anime that aired in Japan starting 1995 and ran for 26 episodes. The series took place fifteen years after a cataclysm and featured the efforts of the shadowy organization NERV fending off aliens called "Angels". The cast of characters typically went through hell, not only from the aliens and battle, but also from within. The series came to the USA on video, and eventually ended up on Adult Swim/Toonami.

Back in 2002, work began on the "Rebuild of Evangelion", a series of movies that would soft reboot the series and update it with computer graphics, and new settings and characters. The intent was to not only modernize the series, but to make it more accessible to non-fans.

The first film in this new series, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Jo in Japan) was released in 2007 in Japan, and 2009 in the USA. The second movie, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Ha in Japan) was released in 2009 in Japan, and 2011 in the USA. Both of these films were eventually aired on Toonami. The third film, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (Q Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Kyū in Japan) was released in Japan in 2012 and took quite a while to get to the USA 4 years, and took until 2016 to be released on video. The third film took a larger departure from the original story than the first two films, but the fourth film was to be largely a new story.

The fourth film Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 (Shin Evangelion Gekijōban: :|| in Japan), was intended to have a 2013 release in Japan. However, the writer Hideaki Anno, fell into depression and could not work on story. Instead, Anno turned to Godzilla, working on the live-action  Shin Godzilla film. Now it seems that the fourth Evangelion film is back in production and now has a 2020 release year.

The current image on the official Japanese Evangelion page has a graphic noting the 2020 target year at the bottom:

The production company for the movie, Studio Khara, tweeted the staff for the film, along with a CG model and sketch of Evangelion Unit 08:

Let's hope that they can meet the 2020 deadline. Seven years is already a long enough wait. If they follow the same pattern as they did for the third movie, we may not be seeing the film localized until 2024. Yeesh.

Here's Funimation's "coming soon" trailer for the third rebuild movie:
