For the last 200 years or so, superhero movies have gotten a bad rap as being typical box office popcorn fare and it doesn't look like that stigma is going to go anywhere. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to add a new Oscar category based around popular films.
Change is coming to the #Oscars. Here's what you need to know:— The Academy (@TheAcademy) August 8, 2018
- A new category is being designed around achievement in popular film.
- We've set an earlier airdate for 2020: mark your calendars for February 9.
- We're planning a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast. pic.twitter.com/oKTwjV1Qv9
With ratings dropping, AMPAS has to do something to get people's eyeballs to look at them. While the Best Picture category will continue to be dramas (the last three winners were The Shape of Water, Moonlight, and Spotlight), it seems this new category will finally give Paul Rudd the attention he deserves as Ant-Man.
The 91st Oscars is set to air Sunday, February 24, 2019. The 92nd Oscars will move to Sunday, February 9, 2020, from the previously announced February 23.
