In April 2017 it was announced that a new Ghost in the Shell anime project was in the works. At the time, it was only described as being a "new world" for the venerable manga/anime franchise. Today, a few more (scant) details were revealed about the upcoming anime.
The new show's name will be Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, which doesn't sound like a completely new world, as the title echoes the previous anime series, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex from 2002, and its follow up Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG (basically the show's second season) from 2004. Stand Alone Complex is abbreviated as SAC, and those previous series focused on the character of Major Kusanagi and the members of Public Security Section 9. The show took place in the year 2030, so if the new show's title is any clue, the new show should take place 15 years after that.
Ghost in the Shell did have another anime between SAC and the upcoming one, which was an alternate take of the original Masamune Shirow manga titled Ghost in the Shell: Arise, which was a four-part original anime video, which was re-edited for television as Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Alternative Architecture
As previously announced, Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki will be co-directors on the show. It's going to be a while though, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 will air on Netflix in 2020.
