Kamala Khan, the current Ms. Marvel, first appeared in comic of the hero who inspired her, Captain Marvel back in 2013. It didn't take long before the character was upgraded to her own series early the next year, written by one of her creators G. Willow Wilson.
All good things must come to an end though. Five years and one reboot later, Wilson will be leaving Ms. Marvel. However, Khan fans should not fret as Ms. Marvel will be getting another upgrade in a new title: The Magnificent Ms. Marvel.
The Magnificent Ms. Marvel will have a new writer, Saladin Ahmed, who will be joined by artist Minkyu Jung. It will be a peaceful turnover of writers says Ahmed:
"It's particularly meaningful for me to be taking over from Willow. She's an incredible writer, and she's a friend. I've only been in comics for a couple years, I come from fiction and poetry and stuff like that, and Willow has been one of the folks who's helped me figure out this whole craft and business. She's my sister, and it's very cool to be taking the baton from her. There's something meaningful there."
As for what we can expect in Magnificent, Ahmed gives us a tease:
"Without giving too much away, there's going to be big-canvas Marvel scope happening in this book, while still maintaining that intimate tone that people have loved about it," he says. "I think that Kamala's earned her superlative. She's been around for a few years and she's been magnificent. We kind of wanted to announce that this was her leveling up — as she would probably put it."
It might not be all sunshine and rainbows though:
"All of the artists who have worked on Ms. Marvel have been stellar, so it's not that anything needs changing, but there's a different tone as we go into this new number one, and the art reflects that. It's not 'gritty Ms. Marvel,' but it's darker and more atmospheric."
Furthermore Ahmed gave this ominous tidbit:
"Ms. Marvel's been pretty fortunate in the way she's been able to manage her family's knowledge of and reactions to her superheroics. That's going to change for the worse, with some pretty heavy consequences."
The Magnificent Ms. Marvel will leap onto shelves March 2019.
