Looks like the spirit of the Ghostbusters isn't dead yet. Though the 2016 reboot of the original franchise didn't do so well at the box office, it seems that Sony doesn't want to let the brand die. This time, they will be going back to the well -- the original well -- and will set the next movie in the same universe that the 1984 original (and 1989 sequel) was set in.
No, we are not talking about another re-screening of the original movies, nor does it seem like this will be the Russo Brothers all-male Ghostbusters project rumored previously. This new Ghostbusters will be co-written and helmed by the original movie director's son, Jason Reitman. Reitma-- er, Jason broke the news exxxclusively to Entertainment Weekly:
"This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the '80s happened in the '80s, and this is set in the present day."
In case you wondered, it looks like this next movie will not have ties to the reboot:
"I have so much respect for what Paul [Feig] created with those brilliant actresses, and would love to see more stories from them. However, this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film."
Papa Ivan Reitman will be prodcucing the new Ghostbusters movie which is scheduled to release in Summer 2020 (note the animated film is also still said to be in the works).
Jason Reitman also dropped a (very brief) teaser trailer for the Ghostbusters 2020:
Of course, we know the sole reason Bleeding Cool's Jude Terror is excited for a new Ghostbusters film…
