WonderCon 2012: Marvel: The Next Big Thing Panel

Marvel's final WonderCon 2012 panel, with Tom Brevoort, Arune Singh, and Sam Humpries brings a few updates about what's coming up in Marvel. A tiny bit of detail to the "new" Dark Avengers series and some creator tidbits.

The panel kicked off with the confirmation that Thunderbolts will continue on as "Dark Avengers", starting issue #176. The same creators will be involved (Parker, Walker, Shalvey) but will have Luke Cage leading a team with Skaar, Ragnarok and other members.

Some Hulk news followed. They once again (from previous conventions) covered the "Stay Angry" story starting in Incredible Hulk #8 and also talked about a new story starting in Hulk #53 called "Mayan" Rule". This is by Jeff Parker and Dale Eaglesham and will have an appearance by Machine Man and Alpha Flight.
Some interior art to "Mayan Rule" can be seen at Marvel's site.

Artist news, as the panel switches over to the Ultimates Comics Universe. David Marquez will be joining Ultimate Comics Spider-Man as a "swing" (hehe) artist starting in issue #9.

Sam Humphries spoke a bit about joining HIckman on Ultimate Comics: The Ultimates in May with issue #10 (with art by Luke Ross). Humphries takes over the writing chores of the book solo starting in July.

More creator changes! Ultimate Comics X-Men #12 is Nick Spencers's final issue on the title. Brian Wood starts as Ultimate Comics X-Men writer on issue #13. Kitty Pryde will be aa big focus in this book. Brian Wood is also taking over the writing duties on (adjectiveless) X-Men as of issue #30 in June. He'll be joined by artist David Lopez.  Wood's take on X-Men is said to be in the more espionage/thriller vein.

The panel promised big news about the Ultimate Comics universe this Summer.

The panel then turned it over to the audience for some Q&A.

Once again, there was talk about Marvel Cosmic. The panel said that there was a reason Nova was in AVX and that the big cosmic stuff will come to the fore at the end of this year or early next year. Brevoort also said "More Guardians [of the Galaxy] stuff coming up when you least expect it."

There was reconfirmation that X-Factor will not directly be involved with AVX, but that some characters may appear. Also SORRY D-Man fans, he will not be appearing in AVX but you will see him before the event.

Brevoort said that the plotlines about a new Sorcerer Supreme will be resolved.

Also mentioned, with Dark Avengers starting it does mean something for the Thunderbolts, as it is the book's 15th anniversary.
