Have we been looking at this wrong the whole time? Shocking revelations ahead!
After a series of alarming press releases from small publishers, the Outhouse has learned that it has been mischaracterizing sell outs in the comic book industry. For years, comic book industry analysts (this is a person who analyzes data about comic book sales, not a person highly skilled in... you know...) have looked at the trend of comic books selling more issues than printed as a sign of impending doom for the industry and utter mismanagement by publishers. But have we been wrong the whole time?
The Outhouse recently published a series of articles bemoaning the growing trend of sellouts at companies such as Image and IDW, like this recently published article on the sellout and return to press of FOUR Image Comics in one week. It has come to our attention, however, that sell outs, such as the one that occurred in just one day for Nathan Edmondson's Dancer #1 (currently being discussed in the Outhouse Review Group) are in fact a good thing, and not the impending disaster we previously believed.
The Outhouse is extremely grateful that several wonderful publishers, who shall remain nameless, alerted us to this misunderstanding, helpfully pointing out our flawed logic while gracefully avoiding the temptation to accuse us of poor and reckless journalism.
The Outhouse hopes that all of our readers will reconsider their views on comic book sellouts. In fact, publishers put a lot of thought into the print runs they produce, and when the books sell out anyway, it is actually an indication that people really like the books, and should be treated as a success. Hard to believe but true.
