SDCC: Archie Comics Promote teh Literacy

Nancy Silberkleit explains why comics should be in classrooms and libraries as San Diego Comic Con.

Source: Press Release

Archive comics CEO Nancy Silberkleit spoke at San Diego Comic Con about the "Secret Origin of Good Readers." Silberkleit believes that people should spend more money on Archie Comics Archie Comics should be featured in more classrooms and libraries in order to ignite an interest in reading in kids. In addition to her role at Archie, Silberkleit heads up her own foundation, Rise Above Social Issues Foundation, Inc., a non-profit that addresses challenging social issues, such as childhood obesity and other chronic medical conditions, as well as bullying, discrimination and environmental concerns through comic books, a concept that seems counterproductive, since fans of comic books are almost universally more likely to suffer from those exact conditions as a result of their fandom.

In any case, Silberkleit advises, "Reading Archie Comics for 30 minutes is what I like to call 'Archie Therapy. The light-hearted, humorous stories have appealed to readers for generations thanks to the talented writers and artists who make Archie a never-ending story. By enhancing literacy and encouraging self-confidence and knowledge through age-accessible, non-threatening reading materials, such as specially created, topical comic books, we strive to stimulate creativity and tolerance in young people, giving them the tools to become a positive influence on their peers through overcoming social challenges."

In truth, this reporter has always enjoyed reading, and this reporter started reading comic books at a very young age. It's a sound concept: give kids something to read that feels like fun instead of homework, and they will want to keep doing it, as opposed to playing video games or going to sixth grade sex bracelet parties or whatever it is those little hooligans do nowadays.

If nothing else, this reporter has become 3% smarter over the course of this article simply from having to type Nancy Silberkleit's difficult to spell last name.
