Tim Hunter Is Back, Baby!

Source: SDCC: Tales from the Edge and the Dark

Tim Hunter, Neil Gaiman's pre-answer to Harry Potter and the greatest mage of our time will make his way back from Vertigo limbo this fall as he joins the cast of Jeff Lemire's Justice League Dark.

Everyone happy? That straight enough reporting for you?  Good, now stop reading.

OP-ED: It's about fucking time! Most of the people who started reading comics when I did point to Sandman as the book that showed them that comics didn't have to be about capes, tights, and boobs – but for me it was Books Of Magic.  I was introduced to Book Of Magic with the first volume of the ongoing, Bindings, written by John Ney Rieber and art by Peter Gross.  Despite the confusing nature of Bindings, (I still think I missed something between the original mini by Gaiman and Bindings, I quickly grabbed vol. 2, Summonings, and soon I was caught up and forced to read month to month by issue #51 – Peter Gross' first issue as writer.  He would continue with the book until it ended with #75.

What made this book special was the way it was approched; Rieber once said "The Books of Magic aren't about Cool. They're about Tim."

But none of that is important, and neither is the fact that after Bone, Books of Magic was the book I gave to girlfriends to get them into comics or that there were times this macho hunk of muscle was brought to tears by the stories (Molly...poor Molly), what is important is that Books Of Magic, and the subsequent series Names of Magic and Life During Wartime tells one of the best coming of age stories no one (close enough to) read.

This writer is not a fan of Jeff Lemire, I've just never enjoyed a book by him, but I will be picking up JLD monthly if only to show love for one of the most under-utilized creations of the 1990s – Tim Hunter.

Trained by Constantine, mentored by The Phantom Stranger, Zatanna, and Doctor Occult, son of the Queen of Faerie (maybe), left for dead by Mister E. at the end of time only to be saved by Death, this generation's Merlin, and all around good guy – Tim Hunter is back! And thus my faith in comics is restored...until the next time he is left in the trash heap.

Finally, DC, cause I know you read this – we (I) want over sized HCs of The Books Of Magic, NOW!

RU, or as he’s known in the writers’ room: the cute one, is relatively unappreciated in his time.  RU’s YouTube show, RUviews is watched by literally multiple people every month and his Outhouse articles have helped line many a bird cage.  Before you send RU a message, he knows that there are misspelled words in this article, and probably in this bio he was asked to write.  RU wants everyone to know that after 25+ years of collecting he still loves comic books and can’t believe how seriously fanboys take them.  RU lives in Akron Ohio (unfortunately) with WIFE, ‘lilRuRu, and the @DogGodThor.  You can also find him on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, & even Google+ (if anyone still uses that).
