About Us

What is The Outhouse and who are The Outhousers? Are you tired of seeing the same press releases and fluff pieces on every comics news site on the internet? Are you interested in reading fresh, bold, and unique perspectives about all of the biggest events and issues in today's comic industry? Do you want the raw, unfiltered spirit of an open forum with real opinions from real comic book fans? Then you've come to the right place! Founded in 2006, The Outhouse is a community of comic book fans with an unapologetically honest opinion on comics, pop culture, and, well, just about everything. We are not a corporate-backed megasite beholden to the interests of publishers and content creators through an incestuous exchange of exclusives and talent access in exchange for unabashed promotion and five star reviews (though we are willing to be for the right price. Dan, Joe, call us.) We say what we feel like saying, follow no editorial direction, and frequently end up pissing off people who can't take a joke... ...and we wouldn't have it any other way! What is The Outhouse? It's this website. It's a blog. It's a message board. Who are TheOuthousers? They're the writers here. They're the message board posters and article commenters. They're the readers who realize that comic book news and commentary should be more than just bland shilling for the highest bidder. Is this something you planned, or something you made up after you realized your website was called The Outhouse and your domain name was TheOuthousers.com? Why can't it be both? Do you hate comics? Of course not. We love comics. So then why do you sometimes make fun of them? We make fun of them because we love them. It's tough love. The comic book industry, its fans, and most especially the media covering it could stand to take themselves less seriously. We hope that, through our mockery, the industry may look upon itself, reflect on some of its more ridiculous and self-destructive practices, and change for the better... BWAHAHAHA okay we know that will never happen. But it's fun to make fun of comics. So are your articles real, or made up, or what? They're real when we feel like it. Some of our writers joke around more and some joke around less. we're just shooting the shit here, like you might if you were hanging out with your friends, but funnier and more intelligent. Most of the shenanigans take place in our News and Satire section. Our comics reviews and features are pretty straightforward. Seriously? There's no way to tell? Sure there is. Besides the fact that it's pretty fucking obvious, the articles that aren't based directly on a real story are labeled as "satire" in the little yellow tags underneath the headlines. The other articles are based on real stories, which are always linked to if you want to read a boring version with no made up quotes where Joe Quesada fucks a donkey. So what's the point? To have fun, and to call out bullshit. The Outhouse is for you, by you. Join our community on the forums, facebook, twitter, or your favorite social media platform, and let your voice be heard and appreciated!                   \n This email address is being protected from spambots. Comic Book and Entertainment News is so stupid--how can anybody stomach it irony-free? Similarly, CBR was practically masturbating the Didiot the other day, and I kept waiting for CBR to turn it around into a joke. Never happened. I can't take irony free entertainment news. The major players are all such shills and phonies, artistically and intellectually bankrupt, self-serving and vapid. When Axel Alonso says in a CBR article that he's "super excited about the change in store for the X-books", he's not really "super-excited". It's like the people who are "passionate about sofas". How can a person be "super-excited" about everything? He can't be. Unless he's dropping acid, shooting stimulants, or taking coffee by I.V. I don't even read the "chat with the EIC" articles in CBR anymore. I just checkout the images to see if any are any worth downloading into my collection. Joe Quesado seemed a bit blunter. He wasn't "super-excited" about everything. I wish I could be half as excited about the few comics still on my pull list as the executives sitting somewhere at the top of the hierarchy behind that comic are. -TimH (Outhouser)   The Outhouse has basically done for comics news what The Onion did for regular news, shown how ridiculous and formulaic and wrong it all is. -Punchy (Outhouser)   I only go to BC and here for comics news. I used to like the TV/movie news (Comic Reel) at CBR, but other sites like Dark Horizons cover the comics/geek-centric TV/movie news as well or better. I've read other people's complaints about CBR & Newsarama writers seeming like they're constantly auditioning for DC & Marvel; those are valid complaints, imo. -Outsider (Outhouser)   Yea, the more you follow "entertainment news" the more of a joke you see the "real news" is. It's all just press releases and corporate approved previews, interviews, etc. Sure, some sites also add in the occasional slideshow top ten or blog post editorial, but mostly its an extension of corporate PR consolidated in one place. There is more truth in our satire than you'll find in most straight pieces on other sites. -Jeremy Shane (Outhouser)   I think it's more like the Daily Show. There's facts here, but we're not afraid to poke a little fun, too. -HNutz (Outhouser)   Yeah, I'm not interested unless there are made up quotes. -Misac (Outhouser)   The News Initiative was one of our best ideas ever. -Christian Hoffer (Outhouser)   I think its the depth of this site that I appreciate most. -Cajun Bean (Outhouser)   Finding The Outhousers was one of the highlights of the year, as a comic reader, for me. The Real reviews are refreshing plus I was introduced to titles I would have never known existed (like "Voice in the Dark"). Thanks and keep up the good work! -Supersoldier Washout (Outhouser)   In an industry, hobby, medium, and pastime that is seemingly overrun with idiots, and has become increasingly joyless for me as both a reader and professional, The Outhousers team manages to keep some of the fun alive for me every day. Thank you all for the laughs in 2013 (as well as the actual news and serious social commentary hidden beneath them), and keep up the good work. -Brian Keene (Outhouser)
