Ultimate Comics Ultimates #12 has two writers and two artists! Is this really necessary, Marvel?

A Word From Our Sponsors... More Below!

Marvel released a sneak peek of Ultimate Comics Ultimates today, and while the preview looks pretty sweet, this reporter wonders if the comic isn't indicative of a growing trend of wastefulness in the comic book industry. Does this book really need two writers and two artists?

Sure, this kind of talent stacking ensures that a book will come out on time each month, but some of the most seminal comics of the past decade, like All Star Batman and Robin The Boy Wonder, only managed to release two issues a year but were considered great works of art. Superstar Artist Rob Liefeld produces, at maximum, five issues of his landmark series Youngblood each decade (at least three of which are relaunches), and yet it remains one of the most influential comics of all time. Meanwhile, bloated creative teams on books like Ultimate Comics Ultimates create a systemic problem that manifests itself even in the title of the book - is the word Ultimate really necessary twice in one title?

Comic book publishers need to stop worrying about putting books out on time and instead use these extra artists and writers to produce new comic books that expand and diversify the selection of books available to readers. For instance, Jonathan Hickman and Ron Garney could leave Ultimate Comics Ultimates and focus on a new book called Wolverine and The Ultimate Avengers, filling a vastly under serviced niche in the comic book market.

Here's the press release:
