DC Hires Ugly Models for New Ad Campaign

DC has decided to cut costs by employing cheap, unattractive male models in their comic con advertisements.

Having spent most of their advertising budget putting up Before Watchmen billboards around Alan Moore's house, DC found themselves in a bit of a pickle. They needed to advertise their presence at the upcoming San Diego Comic Con International but had no money to hire male models to pose for photographs, or, at least, to hire male models with defined abdominal muscles. Instead, DC has found a new pool of talent to star in the ads.

The men, many of whom are overweight, balding and featuring facial hair, are the new faces of DC, replacing more well known faces such as Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman. Unlike traditional model campaigns, which focus on attractive women in scant clothing or shirtless men with jeans cut three inches too low, these ads appear to show fully clothed dudes smirking into the camera, as if they know they shouldn't be featured in any ad campaign.

Adding insult to injury, the models are supposed to represent comic book creators, who we all know are attractive demi-gods with the physiques of Greek sculptures. There is simply no way that the model pictured in the ad below could possibly represent Scott Snyder, who we've always imagined as breathing fire from deep within his heaving, toned chest and shooting lightning out of his soul-piercing eyes. Next they'll be telling us that Brian Bendis is a bald Jewish man from Cleveland or that Steven Wacker is a grizzly woodcutter from backwater Alaska.

If DC is really looking to cut costs, perhaps they should seek out older models who may not be getting as much as work as they used to, but are still handsome enough to carry a campaign. For instance, the model used in this 1990 Levi's Jeans commercial has the sort of boyish good looks that have surely matured into a distinguished and respectable image much better suited to promoting comics and the sexually desirable men who create them.
