For you youngsters, there was a Silver Age version of this from a back-up story in Superman #257 (1972, by Elliot S Maggin & Neal Adams, Dick Dillin, Dick Giordano) explaining what happened when Green Lantern Tomar-Re tried to save Krypton on the day of it's destruction. Hunt around for it on-line. It's a good story.
