View from the Gutters is our weekly book club podcast. Each week we discuss one graphic novel or trade paperback, then nominate and vote on what to read for the next episode so you can read and discuss along with us.
This week on View from the Gutters our topic work is Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E., created by Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen. Nextwave is a 12-issue series that ran between 2006 and 2007. It follows the adventures of the Nextwave team as they combat the villainous plans of H.A.T.E.—Nextwave's former employer—and their shadowy backer, a terrorist organization known as S.I.L.E.N.T. operating under a legit pseudonym as The Beyond Corporation.
It is a crazy, fun, satirical look at superheroes and some of the parts of the Marvel universe you don't see in the pages of more serious comics. It features incredibly vibrant colors, dynamic action, and wild amounts of humor. It's a stand-out book from this period in comics, and one of Warren Ellis's finest works.
In our recommendation section our hosts nominated Avengers Forever, Sex Criminals, Batman and Robin, Vol. 1-3 (Morrison), Prince of Cats, and Avengers Arena for discussion on the next episode, and our selected title is Avengers Forever.
Our hosts for this episode were Andrew Chard, Tobiah Panshin, Joe Preti, Brant Eddy, and Cade Reynolds.
