Venture Brothers 4.10: Pomp and Circuitry

Written by Zechs on Tuesday, September 21 2010 and posted in Reviews

The boys try out different paths in life in looking for a future career. Oh and Phantom Limb returns. This time saner than before. Okay not fully with his right hand man still being a coffee cup of WISDOM.

Dean graduates computer school, Hank does not. Dean goes to college. Hank instead decides to try and join SPHINX. Oh and yeah Phantom Limb plots his unholy revenge against all. Plus characters we haven't seen in awhile and in years return too.
Someone said this was a better season premiere than the previous episode, but really this isn't a season premiere cause really this is just a continuation of season four. Still, it does feel like one. All the major plots from season four are picked up. We get Hank and Dean trying to figure out their future together under various paths and results. Plus Phantom Limb appears to have a more saner plot than he had before in season four and is back to his old self (for the most part).
With all the focus Dean had previously in season 4 we get some spotlight on Hank for a change. Dear God it was awesome. Seeing him join Sphinx and get the results he got was awing. Even more we get the fatherly relationship with Brock and Hank which is always an awesome treat. So damnit I hope there's more follow-up to this. There probably won't. Though damnit Hank's mullet is gone! WHY!? WHY DID THEY HAVE TO RID THEMSELVES OF IT?! THOSE MANIACS!
Really though the bulk of this episode is Phantom Limbs attempt to get his lost limbs back via a new alliance with Professor Impossible. Where this plot goes from here on out should be very intriguing. Even more so of who joins them at the end of the episode. I really am beginning to wonder what's going to transpire and I bet we're only at the tip of that awesome iceberg. I just wonder how many more episodes will be getting before season four finally ends? Three more? Say it isn't so. *looks on Wikipedia* Oh good. They have six more episodes left thank God.
Anyway back to the actual episode, dear God did this episode have so many cameos from characters of seasons gone by. We get Roy Brisby and a couple others who's names I won't mention. And new characters introduced like Professor Impossible's arch villain, Phage and his Pro Teens. Plus more Guild quarrels like who's going to replace their now open chair (the Monarch? Mrs. Monarch? Dean?)?
The jokes in the episode where perfect and any nerd or life long fan of this show was probably in bliss with this episode (I know I was). From Hank's explanation of the different Batmans to Brock's mission with SPHINX to Professor Impossible trying to cover up the massive battle between Phantom Limb and the Guild. Everything just clicked for jokes and the plot. I really can't wait to see where this season continues to build and go.
Oh and the episode had attack Vatican Gorillas and shiny Guild robot dogs with freaking laser eyes. Really any negativity I could have with this episode was wiped by my mind with these entries. Time to watch this episode again!

5 out of 5
