A few weeks back, I had a chance to review a comic called Irresistible #2. I found it to be a flawed, yet entertaining comic. With the arrival of Irresistible #3, I hoped that it would at least match the quality of the previous issue. Instead, it is an enjoyable, but disappointing step back for the series.

 

The main problem with the writing is the history of the mysterious figure that made Allen irresistible to women. Without spoiling the comic, the character's backstory just comes off as hokey. It does not help that part of it comes off as oddly convenient. Looking at it in the context of the series as a whole, it is one of the weakest parts of the Irresistible so far.

 

That is not to say that the comic lacks some enjoyable parts. The backstory behind the men who attacked Allen was a pleasure to read. Raven Gregory's script shines brightest when it comes down to the workings on Allen's state as a "chick magnet". The details behind it make sense and the only way for Allen to return to normal is tragic, yet interesting. 

 

The drop in quality with the writing is also matched by the art. Amin Amat and Mike Stefan handle the art duties, instead of Derlis Santacruz and Franco Riesco (who handled the art on the first two issues). Amat and Stefan's art fails to match the quality of the previous art team's efforts, but their work still manages to be serviceable most of the time. There are a few spots in the comic where the art rises above mediocrity, but the change in art teams is not a smooth one.

 

Irresistible #3 is the weakest issue in the series so far. It is a step down from the previous two issues in both writing and art. Still, the series can end on a high note. Gregory has plenty to work with in order to pull off a satisfying conclusion to the story. Even with all its flaws, there are certainly worse comics to spend your money on than Irresistible.
