Hit-Girl # 5 - Mark Millar Romita Jr.

Written by Arion on Wednesday, April 10 2013 and posted in Reviews

I cannot express how much fun I had reading the final chapter of Hit-Girl. I think anyone familiar with Millar’s works will know that violence is always an important component in the stories of this Irish writer. Well, surely, violence is putting it mildly in the case of Mindy, a sweet girl by day and an avenging executioner by night.

When the mobsters are threatening the lives of Hit-Girl’s foster family, her reaction is more brutal than ever. The gang squad that visits her home is quickly dispatched, without her weapons, Mindy uses kitchen knives and even a sledgehammer to turn a guy’s head into a cesspool of blood and gray matter.

After that, she hunts down and exterminates many other mobsters, killing them in very creative and painful ways. Surely, John Romita Jr. must have enjoyed drawing all this mayhem, especially the decapitated bodies and the intestines and the huge trail of corpses that Hit-Girl leaves behind her.

Meanwhile, Red Mist finally realizes that things are not as easy as they seem to be in the comics. He’s in Asia, training with the best martial artists, but he’s nowhere near to become as good as Batman. In fact, he’s getting ripped off by his masters, who charge him thousands of dollars while teaching him the same self-defense stuff he would learn in a public school. In the end, he decides to quit. It’s too hard to be as lethal as Batman, but it’s much easier to hire someone who already is a living weapon. In Kick-Ass volume 2 we already see Red Mist turned into the infamous Motherfucker. In this miniseries, we learn what happened to him and why he turned out to be such a peculiar nemesis.

About the Author - Arion

Arion, who is either from Chile or New York (it’s not really clear) writes a blog that the Outhouse steals on a regular basis.  Arion is by far the nicest of all the staff writers and the most well behaved only having been banned from one country.  One thing we really appreciate about Aroin is that he writes his reviews in English and Spanish and we hope someday he’ll translate this blurb for us.  We’re not so good at languages, just look at how well we write in English if you need proof.  You should bookmark Arion’s blog -  http://artbyarion.blogspot.com – and actually look at it.  There will be a quiz at the end of every month.
