City Fall continues to hang over our heroes, as they take the fight directly to the Shredder. Though old Shred head unleashes his secret weapon against them: their own brother, Leonardo!!! Ever since the book was hyped by IDW, they made mention that this arc would redefine the book.
So far, they're fulfilling that promise with a story that aims shatter the status quo we're used too. Leonardo has been corrupted and an agent of the Shredder now, this issue showcases that point flawlessly when he slices his blue mask in front of his father, Splinter then dismantling all three of his brothers. It's a bold concept to have one of the main four turn rogue, and I'm loving it. Kevin Eastman, Bobby Curnow, and Tom Waltz have crafted a refreshing take on the Turtles and their universe. Predictability was thrown out the window two issues ago in Part One; when Shredder gutted Casey Jones like a fish.
The villains for the series have never been more serious threats, and the heroes in such dire straits. When a book makes you start to question if the protagonists can even get over the hurdles now thrown before them, then the comic is working. I'm very curious to see the new direction the book takes with “Dark” Leo and with the Shredder on the verge of attaining New York City.
Part of why I'm enjoying this story arc so very much is how much it reminds me of DC's Sinestro Corps War. The foundations for both stories lay in the build-up to what has come before it and the results are just amazing to behold.
The art for the book by Manteus Santlouco is very crisp and the ways he makes the Turtles very distinct in not just their masks, but actual bodies making each unique is nice little addition. Though what Santlocu excels at is action and expression and we get all that in spades with this issue. I particularly loved the opening sequence with Karai training.
If there's any negatives I can say about this is the fight between Leo and Raphael is just too short. Along with the fact that it is fully Raphael's fault that Leo has been taken and twisted by the Foot Clan. Yeah the focus is fully on Splinter for losing his son, but I just wish there was more guilt laid or shown on Raph. Maybe down the line there will. For now, the issue left me just wanting to see Dark Leo bash Raph in some more.
Part 3 of City Fall continues to shatter the world of IDW's TMNT. Leo is now Shredder's right hand and Shredder himself has the city almost in his bladed grip! The Turtles and their allies are clearly reeling. So what comes next? Again, when a reader cannot figure out that from the normal plot you're given, and eager to see the continuation of this story. Well, the book is doing it's job well. Let the fall continue!
