Better Late Than Never Review: Rat Queens #2

The Rat Queens bloody up an ogre.

Last month when Rat Queens first ever issue dropped, it was met with mostly positive comments. One of Image’s newest books, Rat Queens tells the story of the Queens, a rag-tag group of mercs in a fantasy world of drugs, booze and sexy elves. In the cliffhanger of the first issue, the Queens suspect someone has set them up when they are surprised by a giant green ogre while on a routine cleanup mission.
The second issue of this incredibly fun series picks right up where the first issue left off. The Queens are up against an ugly green ogre. As previously mentioned they all hypothesize someone set them up; who is trying to kill the mercs of their local town? After some help handling the ogre, the Queens scamper back to town, tails between their legs. Once there, they realize that other mercenary teams have suffered losses, the Queens being one of the few not to lose a member. Once regrouped with a whole lot of other mercs, the ladies go through a list to formulate who might be trying to off them, orge style.
Similar to last months issue, the second installment of Rat Queens is awesome-ly hilarious. The issue is filled with humor, blood and plenty of action. Writer Kurtis Wiebe is doing a fantastic job so far with moving the story along and he’s already laid down a solid base to build off a run or two of storylines. Likewise, artist Roc Upchurch keeps it fresh with the art, drawing and creating more characters that fit absolutely perfectly with the fantasy world that Wiebe is building. Rat Queens is 100% one of best, new and exciting books on the market right now. Anyone with even a slight fondness for fantasy should be reading this.
Rat Queens #3 comes out November 27, 2013
