The Goon is finally back with a new issue this week. I’ve missed the humorous hijinks found in this title and I’m glad to see it back on the shelves. In this issue, Powell decides to take us on a romp through Mexico, with the majority of the book being written in Spanish. Hombre Lagarto is back and it makes for a pretty entertaining read.
This is the last issue of The Goon in an ongoing series format, as it is switching to a mini-series format going forward. It’s been a really long wait for a new issue and I’m glad they’re going to be managing the title in a different way. That being said, this issue is more of a one-shot and it’s got the humor you’d expect from The Goon. The majority of the issue is in Spanish, and while I didn’t understand most of it, the bits and pieces I could pick out (thanks high school and college Spanish courses!) were hilarious. At one point Hombre Lagarto shows up with a goat and there’s a small Hispanic boy in the panel simply screaming “HE HAS A GOAT!” like it’s not an obvious thing. I don’t know why it made me laugh so much, but it’s that kind of silly humor I love about The Goon. Another fun thing you can do with the book, since it’s in Spanish, is take the dialogue and plug it into an online translator. Crude, half-assed translations made the panels even funnier, especially when reading Hombre Lagarto’s sections. Try it. You’ll like it.
Powell’s art has always been enjoyable in this title and there’s no change in this issue. His depictions of monsters, animals, and big breasted women make the issue even more of a treat, adding to the hilarity and silliness of the whole issue. There’s not much more to say about Powell’s art here because it’s so consistent in every issue.
I miss The Goon and I was extremely glad to see it hitting the stands this week. This issue might not be for everyone, as the Spanish might be annoying to some, but if you take it as the joke it is and have fun with it, you won’t be disappointed. Now, the wait for OCCASION OF REVENGE BOOKS 1 & 2, an eight-issue story about The Goon butting heads with a new witch clan in town, begins.
