Abe stumbles upon an odd Arizona town.
Following the timid, touching last issue, Abe Sapien #9 finds our eponymous hero on the road starting a three issue arc, To The Last Man. From Dark Horse Comcis, co-written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, with art by Max Fiumara and colors by Dave Stewart, the cover by Fiumara and Stewart features Abe mid-explosion, towering above egg sacs.
Abe Sapien finds himself wandering into Payson, Arizona, where he teams up with the local chief of police to investigate a few dead horses. Simultaneously, on the Oregon/Washington border, the occultist Gustav Strobl has promised Vaughn, the partially resurrected former B.P.R.D. agent, full life if he assists Strobl in finding Abe Sapien. Then, while Abe is examining the egg sacs growing on the horses, the chief of police is making his presence known around some familiar hippies who have made camp on a local golf course.
A relatively quiet issue from Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, they rely on Abe’s personability to move the story along. Despite his travels, he has no hesitation in helping someone in need. The inclusion of a webpage detailing Abe Sapien’s supposed death was a nice, different touch. The reappearance of Strobl and Agent Vaughn provides a sinister backdrop for all of Abe’s good deeds.
Following Michael Avon Oeming’s one-shot last issue, Max Fiumara returns guns blazing with his highly detailed art. His faces are expressive and his rotting horse corpses covered in egg sacs are upsetting. The backgrounds are deep, while the foregrounds are always meticulous. Dave Stewart uses the entire color palette masterfully, with the panels featuring the evil Strobl shrouded in darkness. The bright neon green oozing from the inky roots provided a fine contrast.
Using an internet meme alongside the webpage might seem trite, but it was clever using Abe Sapien in place of Admiral Ackbar. Abe Sapien has stumbled upon a weird, little town in Arizona, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens to him with all the craziness surrounding him.
