Tiger Lily turns The Hunters into the hunted!
After a two month hiatus, Kurtis J. Wiebe and Tyler Jenkins’ Peter Panzerfaust returns with issue #16 from Image Comics. The cover by Jenkins is a close up of Lily’s menacing, stern face.
Following the attack on The Sticks, The Lost Boys are split up and attempting to regroup. Peter creates a diversion to allow The Lost Boys to escape knowing full well that Kapitan Haken’s orders are not to kill him. In the present, the journalist Parsons meets with the current owner of the house, Mrs. Bissett, that The Lost Boys regrouped in and he receives the journal Lily kept during the war, detailing all her heroics. Her journal entries tell of her time hunting down Haken’s Hunters after they killed her father.
Kurtis J. Wiebe crafts a tale of revenge, but does it in a loving, intelligent way as opposed to brute forcing it. We’re shown the love in relationships, whether it’s between The Lost Boys and Peter, Lily and Julien, or Lily and her father. Even Parsons schedules a date with Mrs. Bissett to tell her more about Peter’s life. Peter is also ever optimistic as Gilbert declares he’s tired of running and just wants to win, as he simply states, “One day we’ll win,” before charging the enemy.
The first few silent pages of a man and his date at a café in France to Lily standing on the rooftop are Tyler Jenkins at his best. Telling a story solely through images can be tough and he crushes it. His thin, loose linework provides the structure for Kelly Fitzpatrick’s subdued colors. The contrast in coloring between Parsons and Mrs. Bissett walking through the house in present time and what’s happening in the house in the past is genius using oranges and bright browns, and dark greys and blacks, respectively.
Peter Panzerfaust is more than just a simple reimagining of a beloved children’s tale; it’s a tale of heroics and how far you’re willing to go for the ones you love. Jump into the series and the beginning of a new arc as the Hunters become the hunted!
