Samurai Jack turns up the heat on the Ice Queen.
Samurai Jack continues his quest for the Threads of Time in Samurai Jack #4 from IDW Publishing. Written by Jim Zub, with art by Andy Suriano and colors by Josh Burcham, the cover by Suriano and Burcham features Samurai Jack trudging through the snow being closely trailed by a snow-white sabre-toothed cat.
After leaving Grantus, Jack travels far and wide to end up in a frozen village ruled by an ageless ice queen named Krystle. While celebrating her 88th birthday, Samurai Jack gets taken captive and forced to work in the royal kitchen. Jack must break out and do his best to liberate the village from the clutches of Queen Krystle.
Jim Zub writes a straightforward story channeling the main theme of the classic 1989 Spike Lee movie, Do The Right Thing, which is doing the right thing; Samurai Jack doesn’t have much to gain beyond gathering the thread of time, but decides to take it upon himself to liberate a village from tyranny. The village has nothing to eat, yet the Queen forces the villagers to prepare her cakes constantly, thus allowing Zub the room for a smorgasbord of food-based puns. The former mayor states that the queen has a case of “sugar shock” and the normally silent samurai makes a quip about the villagers getting their just desserts.
Andy Suriano’s character design work for secondary characters is exceptionally strong; the lithe, graceful bodies of the musket-knights counteracts their brutish nature, while the queen’s beauty contrasts the villagers’ homeliness. Josh Burcham sticks heavily to dark colors highlighting the cold nature of the ice queen, with the majority of the brighter colors existing solely on the cakes. Letterer Shawn Lee is on point again as he blends unconventional sound effects such as MIX, with nonsensical ones such as ZHUUUNG.
Samurai Jack always has a great lesson to bestow upon a viewer or reader and this issue is no different; do your best to help others and you’ll find what you were looking for along the way. The next issue wraps up the current arc where Jack must face Aku for the final thread of time!
