The Victories take a hard look at what separates them from the bad guys.
From Dark Horse Comics, this week The Victories #9-written and drawn by Michael Avon Oeming, with colors by Nick Filardi-hits the newsstands. The bright cover by Oeming and Filardi showcases Lady Dragon in a menacing action pose in front of headshots of Faustus and Sleeper.
Pockets of humans are beginning to form resistance groups, while police are still trying to take down Strike. Meanwhile, Link is still mind-controlling the perverted sphinxes ravaging the city. Faustus is recalling The Victories retreat from battle and his previous encounter with The Jackal, which changes his perspective on violence and divides The Victories.
Michael Avon Oeming tones down the violence this issue, relying on world-building and exposition. We get to delve deeper into Faustus and The Jackal’s actual relationship and what it took to change his mind. Strike’s vow of nonviolence against the police and government forces is beautifully punctuated by quoting Gandhi.
Also handling art duties, Oeming keeps the panels detailed and the perverted sphinxes creepy. Ever the creative artist, when Strike is hit with the chemical weapon, Oeming uses the gutters to cleverly show his body reacting to it. The panel I enjoyed most though, was Faustus holding a Jackal mask, highlighting his transformation. The cutaway scenes displaying the underground bunkers were crafty as well. Nick Filardi’s colors are heavy on dark grays and blues, complementing the subdued warmer colors.
I was a little bummed about the lack of a back-up, given that most issues of The Victories include one, but considering the amount of unadulterated story-telling, I understand the decision. Having the humans rise up and fight alongside the remaining superheroes is original in a genre so riddled with clichés. The penultimate issue of the arc Posthuman is a quiet one, contrasting what has to be an exciting next issue!
