The Tarkin Doctrine In Action: Star Wars #14

On the fifth day of Sith, Lord Vader gave to me...

Wrapping up the second half of Five Days of Sith, Dark Horse Comics releases Star Wars #14 by Brian Wood, Facundo Percio, Dan Parsons and Gabe Eltaeb. The intimidating cover by Sean Cooke features a closeup of Darth Vader while TIE fighters speed toward the reader.

In this issue, Darth Vader recalls when he struck down Obi-Wan Kenobi, as he and Ensign Nanda arrive at the ruins of Alderaan. A kill-or-capture order is issued for a major Rebel Alliance player hiding near the ruins, and Vader makes sure he’s the first one to capture him. Then, Vader sends Nanda to Chandrila where he thinks Colonel Bircher is holed up, finally wrapping up her five days as Darth Vader’s personal assistant.

Brian Wood devises a touching, intimate narrative through Ensign Nanda’s eyes. The shock and awe she feels at all the death and destruction around her is heartbreaking. I really enjoyed the Vader/Obi-Wan scene recalled from Episode IV. The dialogue was never audible, so it was nice to finally see what Darth Vader said to Obi-Wan before striking him down.

Facundo Percio and Dan Parsons are a solid art pair on pencils and inks, respectively. Their line work is thin and tight, allowing for great detail, especially with spaceships such as the Corellian corvette and the Millenium Falcon. The shot of Vader and Nanda’s ship among the rubble of Alderaan is gorgeous, especially coupled with Gabe Eltaeb’s colors; even though the remains and the vastness of space are both strong darks, but they still contrast each other greatly.

This issue gives us a little more detail into one of my favorite scenes, and we’re shown once again just how cold and callous Darth Vader can be. In the end, Ensign Nanda toughs out her five days and gets her reward, but was it worth it? Find out in Star Wars #14!
