Preserving American Dominance: Think Tank #12

The U.S. and China go to war!

From Image Comics, Minotaur Press, a Top Cow Productions company, presents Think Tank #12, Outbreak Part Four. By Matt Hawkins and Rahsan Ekedal, the grim cover by Ekedal and Andy Troy features a grimacing David holding Mirra in front of a threatening tank. With a quote from Abraham Lincoln to begin (that I don’t think could be any more relevant than now about corporatism and money power), it sets the tone very early for what’s to come.

The standoff between China and the US in the South China Sea over Taiwan comes to a head when the US President dies from an unknown contagion. A similar outbreak happens to David and he is quarantined by the Chinese. It’s now up to David to work with the Chinese to develop a cure.

We see David’s insecurities as he realizes what is going on and how the government used him, and in his darkest moments, David clearly states, “My body will break down into its component parts and become part of other things,” which is perfect for such a humanist character. Matt Hawkins wraps up this arc beautifully with two epilogues tying up any remaining loose ends.

Rahsan Ekedal’s art is great as always, with his attention to detail and clean, black and white imagery. The full page spread of the Chinese scientists being attacked by the virus was raw and foul, as their skin is rotting away and they’re vomiting blood. Even smaller panels such as one focused on General Clarkson are highly detailed, with the highlight being the war scenes on the computer screens.

As always, the back of the issue is filled with links to technology used throughout the issue, this time focusing on news drones, bio-safety levels, and gps triggering devices. Then, there’s quite a bit of information on viruses and many links to see more info. Think Tank will keep you entertained and teach you a thing or three.

My only complaint story-wise was the cut from where David was on death’s door to the soldiers finding him; I just didn’t get how he escaped. Small point aside, I loved this issue. Think Tank is a smart, tech-heavy, thriller. Next month sees a one-shot released before the book takes a hiatus until the summer. Pick this up and say you were into it before it went mainstream with full color!
