Fear the claw! Our weekly dose of lobster is back in Lobster Johnson: Get The Lobster #2! Featuring the star-studded creative team of Mike Mignola, John Arcudi, Tonci Zonjic and Dave Stewart, this issue’s cover highlights Cindy Tynan burning the midnight oil on her typewriter, watched over by a vigilant Lobster Johnson.
After the chief of police in New York declares him a menace to society, Lobster Johnson confronts Cindy Tynan about her continued coverage of him. Lobster has a brief encounter with the police as Cindy’s research leads her to some interesting findings.
As much fun as it is having Mike Mignola and John Arcudi write pulp, it’s even more fun having them write pirates. Having “The Lobster” name used throughout history helps expand the universe. I really enjoy the animosity between the police and the vigilantes. My only issue is that the reveal at the end made it seem as though the character should be recognizable, but I couldn’t place him, which felt incongruous.
Tonci Zonjic’s scenes of Lobster’s run-in with the police is a beautiful ballet that can easily stand up against the greatest Batman fight sequences, complete with police spotlight- although, more realistically, both sides use guns against each other. I could read an entire series about pirates or the Wild West drawn by Zonjic. My favorite panel is from the pirate tale in which El Bogavante is washed out of color while in battle, but is soaked in bright red blood, courtesy of colorist Dave Stewart.
Lobster Johnson: Get The Lobster #2 doesn’t do much beyond world-building, but it does it brilliantly. We’re introduced to some of The Lobster’s past, a Nazi blimp in NYC and Cindy Tynan’s second exposé on Lobster Johnson. This is a great issue to get into if you’re interested in pulp noir!
