Humanity isn't a prerequisite for heroism.
From Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment comes Invincible Universe #12! Written by Phil Hester and with art duties by Todd Nauck and Gabe Eltaeb, this issue’s cover by Nauck and Eltaeb features the top members of The Guardians of the Globe facing off against former members now mutated into joining The Lizard League!
In Dinosaurus’ old lair, The Guardians of the Globe confront The Lizard League, where King Lizard has transformed members of the Guardians into reptiles; while in Titan’s safe house, he is under attack by El Chupacabra. Turns out, Dinosaurus has rigged his bases with nuclear bombs that the victors have to disarm before they kill millions of people.
The opening battle is anticlimactic, which is clever writing by Phil Hester and fitting in the Invincible Universe-although I did find it a bit cheesy with the addition El Chupacabra made to his uniform. The small talk between Brit and his wife showing her oblivious nature is an entertaining contrast to the semi-serious tone of the main story.
Brit’s memory of the previous battle is a great final-page splash by Todd Nauck and Gabe Eltaeb, presenting a close up on Brit’s face surrounded by an exhausting recap of the fight. It’s fun to see Nauck’s alternate take on characters such as Knockout and Bulletproof as they’re changed into lizard people. Gabe Eltaeb is at the top of his game here, especially in the scenes where Kaboomerang is exhibiting his powers and each panel is accented in one color.
On the first page, there’s a nice homage to Watchmen regarding when King Lizard actually initiated the transformation. There’s a lot of characters, which could be overwhelming for a new reader, but with a good portion of the cast morphed into reptiles, it shouldn’t be too hard to follow. Hester and Nauck perfectly execute a short two-issue arc, and I can’t wait to see what The Guardians get up to next!
