I've dabbled, sweetheart. -Han Solo
In Star Wars #16-by Brian Wood, Stéphane Créty, Julien Hugonnard-Bert and Gabe Eltaeb-the wedding marches on. From Dark Horse Comics, the latest issue features a gorgeous cover by Sean Cooke of X-Wings in a training exercise on Arrochar.
Leia Organa and Wedge Antilles are working on rebuilding the Rebellion fleet on Arrochar, though the Arrochars are feeling slighted on their own planet. While Leia is dealing with her wedding plans, an Imperial Super Hauler, an empire droid transport ship, drops out of lightspeed into Arrochar airspace.
The tension Brian Wood creates between Luke Skywalker and The Arrochar Mountain Rangers is thick, as the Rangers openly show their disdain for Luke. I’m glad to see Han Solo retains his snark as he instructs Princess Leia on Imperial Super Haulers. I felt a little of C3PO’s dialogue was rehashed, as he repeats what his droid type actually does.
Coming from a long line of shady royal advisors, the Arrochar advisor is no different; from his first appearance barely in frame, we can tell he's up to no good thanks to Créty and Hugonnard-Bert's design. Once again, I found their strong suit to be in ships and set dressing as opposed to character work, as body sizing issues still persist. Gabe Eltaeb excels in Luke’s camping scenes where the dark blue sky is contrasted by the brilliant orange glow of the fire.
Wood and Créty craft one hell of a story; I let out an audible gasp at the ending. I’m still unsure of where the Arrochar royalty’s allegiance actually lies, and that’s a testament to Wood’s strong storytelling. With possible internal conflict and the Empire knocking on her new door, who can Leia trust?
