Review: Burn the Orphanage: Reign of Terror #1

Rock and friends vs. street fighting robots

Burn the Orphanage: Reign of Terror is written by Sina Grace and Daniel Freedman, with Grace also covering art duty. This series is the second volume of Burn the Orphanage and it gets into the action pretty quickly. We find our protagonist Rock, his best buddy Bear, and girlfriend Jess being chased through the city by a group of Mancorp drones.

I enjoyed the dialogue in this book, it was paced nicely with all the action that was going on, and there were a few parts that made me laugh. Grace’s art feels quick and dirty, but that is a compliment; it moves fast and detail in each panel is provided only when needed. I loved the interactions between all the characters and really got a sense of their history from their dialogue.

This entire issue is full of homages to the influences of the creators. It was one of the things that stood out to me and you can see the passion Grace and Freedman put into this book. Tucked away in the panels and lines from the characters are references to comics, television shows, and video games.

Having never read the first volume of this series, I jumped into this issue blind, but found myself quickly catching up with what was going on and really falling into the story. This book has been on my radar for a while, and having missed the first volume, I found this issue to be a great jumping on point.
