GLX reviews Scenes from an Impending Marriage by Adrian Tomine.
Writer/ Artist - Adrian Tomine
Scenes from an Impending Marriage was originally created as a wedding favor for Adrian Tomine and Sarah Brennan's wedding ceremony. Though the material is somewhat different from what appeared at their wedding, Scenes focuses heavily on their preparation for their wedding. They have to deal with such things as registering, picking out their wedding reception venue and finding a competent DJ for their wedding.
The first thing that I have to point out is Tomine's art. For the majority of Scenes, he uses a 9 panel layout for his pages. He doesn't try to use splash pages or wild and inventive layouts. Just simple and clear layouts to effectively tell his stories. His work is cartoonish, especially in the moments that he conveys in one panel. Still, that's not a bad thing as his work is clear and expressive. Everything looks natural and professional.
As far as the writing is concerned...well..it lacks a little something extra. There's nothing wrong the pacing and the characterization; it just lacks memorable moments. The jokes aren't annoying, but they're not enjoyable.
Even though Scenes is not a great work, I can still admire Tomine's craft. He knows the medium well and his art is pleasant on the eyes. Tomine's writing keeps this from being recommended and the $10 price tag doesn't help. Recommended for Tomine fans only.
