The Goon - One For The Road Review

So The Goon, a sailor, and a man eating gorilla walk into a bar...

Source: The Goon - One For The Road

The Goon returns after its hiatus, and it’s just as great as it always was. Eric Powell’s return to the circus raised brute is just as goofy as you’d come to expect from the title. The issue feels very much like the one shot it is, rather than a return to the series.
The story, such as it is, is a pretty simple one. Goon and Franky try helping a sailor find his lost buddy by hopping across every bar in town. But of course something goes wrong. Complete with witch-like hobos, underage drinking, and Vietnam flash backs, it’s a story that only Eric Powell could come up with. As the three bar hop across town, they end up at Norton’s just as a giant man eating gorilla shows up and starts devouring movie stars. Yea, I know, it only makes slightly more sense in the story itself, but somehow Powell makes the nonsensical story work.
Powell’s art is as great as ever. One thing that always separates his work from the rest of the pack is just how smooth everything looks, and this issue’s no exception. What really stands out in this issue is the caricatures of all the movie stars that go parading in during the second half of the story. The double page spread of the man-eating gorilla chasing a bunch of well-known characters is especially nice. As usual The Goon is an off the wall crazy adventure. Even with a story as disjointed as this issue’s, it still retains that Goon charm.
