When the chips are down, will Abe be able to save his team?
Abe Sapien returns in issue 15, Lost Lives. From Dark Horse Comics, and co-written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, this issue sees artist Juan Ferreyra join the Hellboy Universe. The cover by Sebastián Fiumara and Dave Stewart features Abe standing menacingly in front a partially smoke-shrouded Roger the Homunculus.
A flashback issue back to 2005, long before Hell on Earth or the Black Flame, this issue provides a smaller, personal exchange between Abe and Roger as they discuss the future of Abe’s involvement in the B.P.R.D.
The major theme Mike Mignola and Scott Allie touch upon here is whether or not Abe is fit to return to the field; when the chips are down, will he be able to save his team? The exchanges between Abe, Roger and Agent Vaughn show Abe’s disconnection from the team. His handling of the new specimen also shows his carelessness and lack of awareness. The little bit of Ashley Strode in the beginning provide some comic relief before the danger to come.
Clearly ignoring my plea last issue for the Fiumara’s to always draw Abe Sapien, I retract my plea, for Juan Ferreyra’s art style is perfect in this issue. Bringing the same energy and terror he brought to Colder, Ferreya crafts absolute horror, even if for a few short pages. The colors, with assistance by Eduardo Ferreyra, keep towards the darker end of the spectrum, with even the brighter colors feeling muted. This all combines in my favorite panel of Abe explaining his connection to Langdon Everett Caul and Caul seemingly manifesting right beside him.
Continuing the string of one-shots, Mignola and Allie help to flesh out Abe’s world and bring attention to strained relationships between members of the B.P.R.D, while Ferreyra’s realism and clear style, help keep the darkness around Abe Sapien.
